[...] Science and KDE: rkward rkward is a nice frontend for the R programming language, which adds a GUI with the power of KDE to R. Unfortunately the program is still somewhat unstable (also shown by a warning when you run it) and its main developer has currently very little time to work on it. In case you may want to help, you can hop to the rkward-devel mailing list. [...]

it was a pleasant surprise to see rkward being showcased.... thank you!

@atomopawn: you are more than welcome to join the rkward team... and as the author notes, any "released" version will not compile with R 2.8. but the svn code works - on both KDE 4.2 and KDE 3.5... look here for the details: http://rkward.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?title=RKWard_SVN

i personally use it on RedHat EL 5.3 (with svn 0.4.9 release branch) and kubuntu 8.10 (with svn trunk)

Interesting. One of the projects that has been on my back-burner for awhile is a Qt-based R front end that provides a spreadsheet-like interface for manipulating the data and pull down menus to access a very limited set of R features. (I was going to call it "Qter" and I actually wrote some preliminary Qt-4.4 code, but never got around to coding the interface with R. The reason to such a horrible hack (spreadsheets? Ick!) is that the Mathematicians in my department want to replace some proprietary Excel plugin they use for doing visualizations in the statistics classes. I forget what it's called, but it's a very popular package. I figure that a program which can harness the power of R to the beauty of Qt/KDE would be pretty impressive. Shame I haven't had more time to work on it, though. I'll have to see if I can get rkward to work.
